Artfest From Down Under

One again our Catholic Schools Week was finished off with another fantastic Art Fest! This year we continued the wonderful St. Paul’s tradition with our Australian Art Fest. Students got to do everything from Aboriginal face painting to attempting to play the didgeridoo. At the craft tables, students were able to decorate origami boomerangs and homemade rainmakers, as well as Kiwi magnets and Koala masks. These were such fun and exciting crafts and there were so many to do!  In addition, we also had a guest from Australia. He taught us all about Australia, the origin of its flag, the animals that inhabit the country and so much more. It was a great end to an already wonderful day.

Some of the other activities involved an more academic approach.  Mrs. O’Keefe, a doctor at Mayo Clinic, gave an in depth talk about Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian woman who worked to cure Polio.  Another activity included getting a close up look at a bearded dragon, a lizard-like reptile straight from Australia. The Market once again provided an opportunity for students to sample some Australian snacks, including Fairy Bread and Vegemite. Our Australian themed lunch was straight from Down Under with a beet and pineapple topped burger along with meringue topped with berries. Many of the eighth graders on the newspaper staff got inside look at how Artfest all comes together when they were given the opportunity to volunteer. Many students made crafts with the help of the students. Artfest is a huge project and if your parents volunteered, please thank them our eighth graders. The newspaper staff would like to say a huge thank you to Janice Brinker and all of the parents who made it possible. Artfest is such an amazing tradition and hopefully it never ends. The only other thing to do now is to take a trip to Australia!
